1. Vesakhi Mela 2002 Vesakhi Mela 2002 was celebrated on a grand scale in April 2002 with His Excellency, the President of Singapore, Mr S R Nathan as the guest-of-honour. Vesakhi Mela 2002 was themed as a ‘community experience’ with the Central Singapore Community Development Council joining hands with Singapore Khalsa Association to organize this event. SKA was also able to showcase the rich heritage of the Sikhs to the community at large. In the morning, over 400 youths took part in Netball, Football and Hockey tournaments. In the afternoon, people from all walks of life joined in and enjoyed Giddha, Kabadi, Gatka, Dol Blast, Sepak Takraw, Silat, Wu Shu, Tug-of-War Telematches, Food and Fun Fair and the music of the Gurkha Band, The day ended with a Bhangra Nite for over 1000 people. 2. Gurdwara Cup 2002 Soccer : Champions for the third successive year Netball : Runner-up for the third successive year Hockey: Fair Play Trophy; Harjit Singh awarded Most Promising Player status Golf : Over 30 golfers from Singapore participated Others : Special award for Ajit Singh for his achievements in hockey and cricket. 3. Marking of Balestier Plain as a Historic Site The marking of Balestier Plain was held on 30 March 2002. It was a joint effort with Balestier Plain Clubs and National Heritage Board. The guest-of-honour Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, Acting Minister for Community Development and Sports and Minister-in-Charge of Muslim affairs unveiled the historic Site Marker at Balestier Road. 4. Visit of Mr Chan Soo Sen Mr Chan Soo Sen, MP for Joo Chiat and currently with MCDS had expressed his desire to have a dialogue with some of the Management Committee Members of the Balestier plain Clubs. This was held on 14 May 2002 at SKA at 7pm. About 30 Management Committee members from the Balestier Plain Clubs were present. The dialogue was open and various issues were discussed like lease for clubs and car park lot at Rangoon Road. Dinner was served for all participants. 5. Dhol Blasters 2002 by Young Khalsa The Dhol sessions are conducted by Mr Kuldip Singh. The aim of these sessions is to allow Sikhs to master the traditional art of Dhol playing while enabling the students to interact and network with one another. The sessions helped them to further understand the richness of the Sikh Culture and heritage. The sessions take place every Friday from 7.00pm to 9.00pm at 4th floor of the Association. 6. Remaking of Singapore 2002 Date 4th May 2002, 3rd Floor SKA. The Guest of Honour Dr Viran Balakrishnan, Minister of State for National Development and Chairman of Remalang Singapore Committee. The dialogue session was to provide a platform for the Sikh Community to share its views and provide feedback on issues and challenges in the Remaking of Singapore.
